There is a husband and wife who have two children. Sophy, the eldest daughter, is eight years old. Every day, Sophy goes with her mother to sell fried banana cakes at the village school. While the students are studying in their classrooms, Sophy secretly watches them learn through the classroom window. A boy named Theun, who lives nearby in the same village, often takes time to teach Sophy lessons at home. Teacher Bopha, who is both the village librarian and a schoolteacher, feels great sympathy for Sophy and wishes to help her go to school like other children. Later, Teacher Bopha helps register Sophy so she can finally attend school. Sophy and her parents are overjoyed. Children are encouraged to read this book to learn about Sophy’s life after she starts school — how she learns to read, write, and count alongside her new friends.
