There once was a poor Brahmin who owned a single ox named Nandhivisala. One day, the ox wished to repay his master’s kindness. He told the Brahmin to make a bet with a wealthy merchant, wagering one heap of money that he, the ox, could pull an enormous cart. Unfortunately, the Brahmin lost the first bet. Seeing that his master was saddened, Nandhivisala comforted him and encouraged him to make another bet with the merchant—this time for two heaps of money. During the second contest, the Brahmin spoke kindly and gently to Nandhivisala. Hearing his master’s pleasant words, the ox felt encouraged and pulled the huge cart with all his strength. The villagers cheered and praised him, and in the end, Nandhivisala won the competition, bringing joy and reward to his master.
