Every year, a mysterious force tramples their father's field, and the three sons take turns guarding it. Only Boots stays awake and discovers the cause: a magical horse. He tames three magical horses on three nights, each more powerful than the last, and receives armor and gear from them.

Later, the king offers his daughter’s hand in marriage to anyone who can climb a glass hill and pluck three golden apples she drops from the top. Many noblemen try and fail. Disguised in armor from the magical horses, Boots climbs the hill over three days, catching one apple each day. On the final day, he reveals his identity and proves he is the hero. He wins the princess and is celebrated as a true, unexpected champion.
The story highlights themes of humility, perseverance, and hidden strength.
