Every day on their way home from school Jennifer and her bossy friend Mary play on the horse tree, an old apple tree in the ground of a long - ruined mansion. When a new housing estate is build in the grounds Jennifer and Mary wonder what will happen to their tree, and whether they will still be allowed to play on it. The tree survives the new building but Mary and Jennifer stop being friends. Jennifer, playing in the horse tree by herself, finds a special hiding place in it and through that - a new friend.
