The Mahāvesantara Jātaka is the 10th and final Jātaka in the collection of the Ten Great Jātakas (Dasabodhisattuppatti Jātaka), which recount the past lives of the Buddha. It tells the story of the Buddha's final existence as a Bodhisattva before attaining enlightenment, in the form of a prince named Vessantara. This Jātaka illustrates the perfection of Dāna Pāramī—the virtue of generosity—demonstrated in its most extraordinary and selfless form by Prince Vessantara.
