ភាពល្បីល្បាញរបស់ធនញ្ជ័យបានលីទៅដល់ស្រុកចិន។ ស្តេចចិនក៏ចង់មកស្រុកខ្មែរដើម្បីផ្ចាញ់ធនញ្ជ័យ ។ ធនញ្ជ័យខ្លាចចាញ់ គាត់ក៏បានទៅលោតទឹកហើយក៏អណ្តែតទៅដល់សំពៅចិន។ លុះដល់វេលាកំណត់ ធនញ្ជ័យបានឈ្នះក្នុងការដោះប្រស្នា ។ ក្រោយមកស្តេចខ្មែរភ័យខ្លាចធនញ្ជ័យដណ្តើមរាជក៏បញ្ជាអោយធនញ្ជ័យទៅនៅស្រុកឆ្ងាយក្បែរទន្លេ ។ ធនញ្ជ័យបានប្រមូលពន្ធពីរាស្រ្ត ដំណឺងនេះបានលីដល់ព្រះរាជាទ្រង់ក៏អោយសេនាយកធនញ្ជ័យទៅសម្លាប់ ដោយចងនៅកណ្តលទូក ។ ធនញ្ជ័យបានសុំអោយសេនាស្រាយចំនងចេញពីខ្លួន និងសុំអោយអ្នកចែវទូកស្រែកថា ហៃអើៗ នៅពេលដែលខ្លួនធ្លាក់ទឹក ។ ក្រោយពីរួចខ្លួនគាត់ក៏បួស ។ ក្រោយពីដឹងថាធនញ្ជ័យស្លាប់ស្តេចចិនក៏ចង់ផ្ចាញ់ប្រស្នាម្តងទៀត។ លោកសង្ឃជ័យក៏មកបិណ្ឌបាតនៅរាជវាំង ។ ព្រះរាជាក៏ចាត់អោយធនញ្ជ័យនៅចាំដោះប្រស្នាជាមួយអ្នកប្រាជ្ញស្រុកចិន ។ ក្រោយឈ្នះក្នុងការដោះប្រស្នាជាលើកទី២ បានរៀបការជាមួយនាងសួស្តី ។ ក្រោយរៀបការធនញ្ជ័យក៏បានធ្វើដំណើរទៅស្រុកចិន ពេលទៅដល់ធនញ្ជ័យនិយាយពាក្យមិនសមរម្យដាក់ស្តេចគាត់ក៏ត្រូវបានគេចាប់ដាក់គុក ។ ធនញ្ជ័យក៏ប្រើប្រាជ្ញាខ្លួនដើម្បីបានចេញពីគុក ។ ក្រោយមកគាត់ក៏ធ្លាក់ខ្លួនឈីហើយគាត់ក៏ផ្តាំប្រពន្ធអោយដាក់ចម្រូងដោតលើផ្នូររបស់គាត់ ។ The fame of Thon Chansay spread all the way to China. The Chinese king wanted to come to Cambodia to challenge Thon Chansay. Fearing defeat, Thon Chansay jumped into the water and drifted toward a Chinese ship. When the time for the riddle contest arrived, Thon Chansay won.
Later, the Cambodian king, afraid that Thon Chansay might take over the throne, ordered him to live in a remote area near a river. Thon Chansay began collecting taxes from the people. When this news reached the king, he ordered his soldiers to kill Thon Chansay by tying him up in the middle of a boat.
Thon Chansay asked the soldiers to untie him and requested the rowers to shout “Hai oh oh!” when he fell into the water. After escaping, he became a monk.
When the Chinese king learned of Thon Chansay's supposed death, he wanted to challenge riddles again. Venerable Chay (Thon Chansay in monkhood) went to receive alms at the royal palace. The king appointed him to compete in riddles once more with the Chinese scholars.
After winning the second contest, he married a woman named Suosdey. After the wedding, Thon Chansay traveled to China. When he arrived, he spoke disrespectfully to the Chinese king and was imprisoned. He used his wit to escape from prison.
Later, he fell ill, and before his death, he instructed his wife to place a chamroung daut (ceremonial stone or marker) on his grave.
